You may say, "Are you crazy? Autism is a blessing?" Over the years I have come to recognize that YES, autism has it's blessings: Fully appreciating the sacredness of life. The true meaning of unconditional love. Patience.(ok,so I am still working on this!) To never give up HOPE. To never give up & find strength you didn't know you had. The blessing of a unique little boy with a vibrant spirit and delightful squeal. Jacob, I am so BLESSED you are my son!

A Few of My Favorite Things

I haven't updated in a while, but I've been wanting to add this list of all of things dear to Jacob!

-pillow (or "piddow") And not just ANY pillow! It MUST be the
Precious Moments baby pillow; (that has become increasingly
hard to find in the stores!) We've been through many pillows
over the years. He currently has two and he must have both of
them with him at naptime, bedtime, or any other time he is
needing a little extra security!

-Water. Drinking it. Playing in the kitchen sink. Running
upstairs to play in the shower or flush the toilet. His
kiddie pool in the backyard. The fish bowl. If it has water,
Jacob is fixated by it!

-Basketball. Jacob's gross motor skills are no problem! Some
people may say that as his mother I am biased...But I kid you
not, if he could learn to talk and take direction, he would
have a future in the NBA! Amazing form for a 6 year old!

-Singing/music. As mentioned previously his favorite song is
"It's Raining, It's Pouring." (Hey a song about WATER!!) But
thankfully he has expanded his repetoire a little bit. You may
not always understand the words, but can usually recognize the
tune!

-Trains. He loves it when we get caught in traffic due to a
train passing by. So does his brother Noah, who is not
autistic. Recently we were "first in line" waiting for a
to pass. When it was through, as we passed over the tracks
Noah exclaims, "THANK YOU sooo much Mommy! You're sooo
awesome!" Naturally I took full credit! It's not very often
that a child tells you that you are "sooo awesome"!! Why ruin
the moment by telling him that Mommy had nothing to do with it!

-Water. Just in case I forgot to mention it.

-Movies: 1.Thomas the Tank Engine(although we prefer the videos
with more songs and fewer "story stops." 2.Barney (I think I am one of the few parents on the planet who isn't totally annoyed by Barney. The only Barney video that really ever got on my nerves was the Valentine video, and that was because of the Queen of Hearts character! "Oh my stars and hearts!" she'd
exclaim over and over again. Joel and I counted once. She
Valentine or heart 63 times in a 50 minute video. Absolutely
nauseating! 3. Finding Nemo (a-ha! something else with
water!) 4. Toy Story

-Fish. As a reward to brother Noah for switching from Pull-Ups
to underwear, we got a fish this spring. Because Noah, our
budding right-wing Republican, is able to identify the
president and vice president, we got a red betta and named him
George W Fish. We used to keep George on the kitchen counter.
Now he is in lock-down up in mom and dad's room. Jacob always
likes to touch the outside of the bowl and say "Fish...soft."
Aside from being fascinated by the marbles at the bottom of the
bowl, he recently was able to reach into the bowl and grab
George out. It's been a few weeks, and George is still with
us. I guess fish have 9 lives too!

-Newspapers/magazines. Although he can't read Jacob loves to
look at them and study the words. A real treat when you are
trying to read the Sunday paper. Oh well...usually nothing
worth reading in the Kansas City Star anyway, right??

-Water. Did I mention that already?
